Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BCE–322 BCE) identified the classic four elements-earth, water, air, and fire-as the building blocks of the universe. Men as a sex were hotter and drier than women.Ībove left: Aristotle, De Animalibus, ca 1225. Youth was hot and moist, age cold and dry. The young warrior’s choler gave him courage but phlegm produced cowards. Heat stimulated action, cold depressed it. The influence of the humors changed with the seasons and times of day and with the human life span. In the human body, the interaction of the four humors explained differences of age, gender, emotions, and disposition. (third image) The hot, dry man of choler furiously beats the woman kneeling helplessly at his feet.

(second image) A cold, moist phlegmatic couple prefer retirement and leisure, signified here by music. (first image) The hot, moist man representing the sanguine temperament is depicted as an active wooer embracing a woman. A medieval German woodcut depicts the temperaments of the cold and dry qualities of the melancholic disposition, which were associated with old age, retentiveness, and scholarship, like the old man depicted here with his head resting on a table. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury first set forth the Ontological Argument in the eleventh century.Above, left to right: Images from Deutsche Kalendar, 1498. What is the ontological argument for God’s existence?Īs an “a priori” argument, the Ontological Argument tries to “prove” the existence of God by establishing the necessity of God’s existence through an explanation of the concept of existence or necessary being. Yet the statement is not self-evident to us because God’s essence is not something we can comprehend fully. Is God self evident?įor Aquinas, the statement God exists is self-evident in itself since existence is a part of God’s essence or nature (that is, God is his existence-a claim to which we’ll turn below). Again, he drew upon Aristotle, who held that each thing has its own natural purpose or end. Aquinas’s fifth and final way to demonstrate God’s existence is an argument from final causes, or ends, in nature (see teleology). In Aquinas’s system, God is that paramount perfection. The second step is the argument that whatever is in the genus of being, goodness, or any other perfection, is caused by whatever is maximum in that genus. predicated in relation to a “most,” and goodness, truth, nobility, and being are all susceptible of comparison in things. What is Aquinas fourth way?ĪQUINAS’ FOURTH WAY. To take away the cause is to take away the effect. It is not possible to regress to infinity in efficient causes. The Argument: There is an efficient cause for everything nothing can be the efficient cause of itself. What is the argument from efficient cause? This yields three types of causes: fixed states (non-modifiable), dynamic states (modifiable) and events. What is a efficient?ġ : productive of desired effects especially : capable of producing desired results with little or no waste (as of time or materials) an efficient worker efficient machinery.

That actualization is the composition of the form of the thing that comes to be with the subject of change. What did Aristotle say about change?Īristotle says that change is the actualizing of a potentiality of the subject. In particular, he believed in four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. What are the 4 elements according to Aristotle?
